Mary O’Meara, Certified Nurse Midwife
Owner, CNM
Women’s Healthcare, Tampa, Florida

What have been your most helpful resources?

I have made sure to set my wages competitively and even higher than average for CNMs in Florida. I obtained wage information on CNMs from the American College of Nurse Midwives.

I have always built in incentives so that the more my staff works, the more they get paid. I never ask anyone to pick up extra work or an extra shift gratis...I always present extra work as an opportunity for extra pay.

I take everybody on retreats every year. We are all very engaged in the whole practice and occasionally we have dinner meetings to discuss the practice. At our clinic, we make decisions as a team. The physicians don’t make the decisions solo and the CNM doesn’t---we have team meetings and decide together.
