Fran Nelson, C-FNP, Ph.D.
Owner, Director and FNP Care Provider
Nelson Family Clinic, LLC , Hilbert, WI

What have been your biggest challenges?

Administrative Oversight: I spend about 3-6 hours per week dealing with business issues. I probably don’t delegate nearly enough to other staff.

Major stumbling blocks and oversights: Finding an affordable space. Marketing has been my biggest oversight. Business Management and Personnel were all hurdles especially hiring and firing staff.

I read a lot. I also visited two rural health clinics. After that I learned as I went. I hired an accountant who worked with other health practices and listened to his advice. I made mistakes and learned from them. I was lucky. I should have gotten more expert advice in establishing a system for billing and rebilling. We began with a software billing system but never made use of all of the features to keep the payments coming in as fast as the billing goes out. This continues to be is the number one problem we are still dealing with.
