What
are your privileges and prescriptive authority?
Hospital
Privileges: Both of us, Gretchen and Jill have hospital
privileges. Gretchen, the PNP has privileges at three of the
four hospital systems in the service area...and is privileges
at the fourth are pending. Privileges for Jill, the FNP are
pending. It has been more difficult to find a collaborating
Family Practice Physician for the hospital. We think this
is partially because pediatricians have been collaborating
with NP's for at least 30 years and thus have worked out some
of the details of a collaborative practice. Family docs are
at a different place in this learning curve and have more
questions and concerns about collaboration and financial issues.
Gretchen believes that NPs are more focused on primary care,
disease prevention and health promotion and feels hospitalization
issues are better left to the physciains or NP hospitalists.
In general, the pediatric hospitals have "house staff"
working in collaboration with primary clinics. Jill is looking
at working with a hospitalist group to manage the hsoptiatlized
adult patients. This concept is also new to adult medicine
in the Twin Cities.
The four
hospitals with which Mendota Health wishes to have privileges
with are all within 10-20 miles of the clinic.
Prescriptive Authority: Both of us have prescriptive
authority as defined by the Minnisota Statute and are able
to prescribe all medications and theraputic devices. A collaborative
agreement with a physician is in place for both pediatrics
and family medicine. Both of us, Gretchen and Jill, have DEA
certficates.
