14 month old baby “Justin” is in the process of being discharged from a major medical center in Boston. His home is in Willowdale, a small rural community several hours away from Boston. The baby has severe Cystic Fibrosis. There is an issue as to whether or not the baby should be sent home, as care in his home community may be insufficient. His insurance will not cover any additional time in the hospital, and his family has limited financial resources.

Let’s think about this. I’ve been talking with Justin’s family physician on the phone. She’s called twice; she’s very concerned and is interested in caring for him when he gets home. I’ve also talked with a home health nurse who called to see what she needs to have ready when Justin is transferred. Both of these people seemed to be willing to work hard to care for this child. I think we have to try to help them. Justin’s parents are very anxious for him to come home, but they're scared too; they're also worried about money and having to run back and forth to Boston.
