Case Study: Childhood Immunizations
A well educated (PhD prepared) mother does not want her child immunized
because she "has researched the topic carefully and feels that she knows
best." She is fighting the school board about this (immunization is
a state requirement) and is unhappy that the NP/PA/MD will not support
her position. The provider presses the point that children going to
school must be immunized to protect other children and she tries to
share information from CDC, but the mother storms out.

Case Study: Healthy Behaviors
A provider tells a teenager that she will not care for her unless she
agrees to enter a smoking cessation program. The teen has no intention
of quitting. The mother becomes involved because she wants her daughter
on birth control as soon as possible, but the provider declines unless
the teenager enters the smoking program.

Case Study: Infectious Disease
The provider does not want to prescribe antibiotics because he/she
has diagnosed the child with a viral illness. The day-care center, however,
refuses to allow the child back in day care unless the child is on an
antibiotic. The mother thinks that the practitioner is not sympathetic
to the fact that she will lose work if she has to stay home with the
child. The practitioner believes that indiscriminate use of antibiotics
is detrimental to the child's health.
