Asthma care used to be concentrated on broncho-dilation with treatment focused on airway restriction rather than inflammation, a more significant contributing factor. Studies have found that chronic inflammation may lead to irreversible remodeling of the airway at the cellular level. Airway remodeling creates tissue that is less responsive to treatment and leads to further progression of the disease.
