PROCESS
Research
Look at the list below and choose 2 disciplines that are different from your own to research. These do not have to be in your field, but they should be disciplines with whom you might work (e.g. a midwife might choose to research an anesthesiologist and a CNP).

Health Disciplines

  • Physician
  • Nurse
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse Midwife
  • Pharmacist
  • Physician Assistant
  • Public Health Provider
  • Social Worker

    • Physical Therapist
    • Occupational Therapist
    • Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
    • Anesthesiologist

Analyze

  1. What are the primary criteria that make up this discipline?
  2. What are the core values?
  3. Which core competencies are needed to work in this discipline?
  4. How many years of school (include internships, residency, etc.)?
  5. What is the annual salary?
  6. What leadership opportunities and obligations might be found in this discipline?
  7. What are some probable stressors?
  8. Describe the daily workload (avg. number of patients, reports, etc.).

Evaluate

  1. What are some commonalities among the 3 disciplines?
  2. How are they different?
  3. How might a person in from different disciplines see something different from you?
  4. What kinds of things may vary and cause potential conflict?
  5. How could understanding another discipline’s lens help to prevent potential conflict?
  6. Taking what you’ve learned, what is something helpful/insightful that you can share with others?
