The Quality Standards Inventory (QSI) is a Likert-scale survey instrument designed to assess the quality of online courses based on the tenets of active learning and effective teaching principles.  Each of the 5 categories underscores an educational principle related to learner-centered instruction. Within each category, specific criteria demonstrate instructional strategies to measure the degree to which the course meets the tenets of learner-centered instruction. A mean score of the criteria determines to what degree a course is learner centered.

Originally designed to help instructors personally evaluate their instructional approaches and strategies used in their online courses, the QSI has evaluative applications for both faculty and students. Used as a tool for reflection and self-evaluation, the QSI validates effective teaching practices and provides a framework for determining areas of strength, areas of needed refinement and foci for future faculty development. The QSI can also be used by instructors for student and outside objective peer course evaluation.
